Reference Video Training

The Imperial General Headquarters is the highest echelon of command of the armed forces of the Empire. In terms of function, it was approximately equivalent to the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff and the British Chiefs of Staff Committee.

While I, personally, am not a "gamer" by nature, war-gaming certainly has it's place in military education. This is an introductory overview to the Prussian "Kreigsspiel" game, that sparked a revolution in military staff training, from the excellent "Invicta" channel.....

Erbswurst - the Iron Ration (Re: Reference Video Training)

Post by MichaeldeAppinfeldt »

Created in 1867, Erbswurst was the soup component of the standard "marching" - or "iron" - ration of the Imperial German Army from 1867 to 1945. The German company Knorr manufactured erbswurst until 2018. Because of the nature of its manufacture, erbswurst has essentially no expiry date (this, of course, should not be taken as medical advice; use discretion). A tube of erbswurst, along with several pieces of hardtack/biscuit, along with a few condiments, could feed a soldier for a day.

Below are a pair of videos that provide both an introduction to erbswurst, and a method for making it is the home, as Knorr has ceased production of the product. The home-production method described here, as well as its product, are under study by the Imperial General Headquarters.

Real-World Combat 1 (Re: Reference Video Training)

Post by MichaeldeAppinfeldt »

The following video was shot around 2012. It depicts a combined team of US Army Special Forces (the "ODA" referenced stands for "Operational Detachment Alpha", what used to be known as "A-Teams"), Rangers and Paratroopers operating as instructors with Afghan National Army troops, somewhere in the mountains of Afghanistan. The column, traveling by road, was engaged by sniper fire, and dismounted. This sniper fire was likely premature, as no IED detonated in the road. The Taliban attempted to engage in a close infantry attack on the column -- which column engaged them at under 200meters range, while calling in air support from a pair of US Air Force A-10 "Warthog" ground support attack aircraft; the "Winchester" call-sign about 2/3 of the way through the video indicates one of the aircraft being forced to return to base because it had expended every round and munition it had on board. The end of the video shows a light mortar team in action, as the surviving enemy withdraw.

This video is an excellent example of the confusion and stress of real combat, as well as giving a sense of how "empty" a real modern battlefield can feel.

Free Navies of WW2

A 20 minute program giving a brief overview of the "free navies", mostly of the European Theater of Operations (ETO), who escaped the Nazi onslaught in 1939-1940. The Drachinifel channel is recommended in the highest terms for introductions to naval warfare and histories.

Technicals - The Modern Chariot (Re: Reference Video Training)

Post by MichaeldeAppinfeldt »

"Technicals" is a new(-ish) term for a type of improvised fighting vehicle that has been around since motor vehicles started being pressed into military service. Since the 1980's, however, the Technical has become the go-to combat vehicle for military forces - both regular and irregular - around the world.

In these three videos, the tank Encyclopedia channel takes a deep dive on the subject. It is an excellent series of videos, from an excellent channel......

Op/Serval...Mali (Re: Reference Video Training)

Post by MichaeldeAppinfeldt »

This was an impressive operation, much more so than I first thought. France rapidly assembled a widely dispersed mobile and airborne battle group, and conducted a mostly-successful, multi-pronged offensive all on very short notice. This included mounted dragoons, helicopter assaults, special operations insertions, air-landings and even parachute infantry drops, in a mirror of both French operations from the Cold War, as well as an echo of the Rhodesian Bush War.

Impressive. Most impressive.
